There is nearly unanimous consent among WTO practitioners and scholars that the remedy of tariff compensation is legally superior, economically more efficient and socially more beneficial than retaliatory suspension of tariff concessions (tariff retaliation). This article argues in favour of a revitalization of tariff compensation. However, under the current regime compensation is a thoroughly unattractive policy instrument for decision makers having to temporarily opt out of a WTO Agreement in reaction to domestic shocks. Hence, tariff compensation is vastly underused. We examine reasons for the relative unattractiveness of this policy instrument and propose a substantial reform agenda of the WTO agreements and the dispute settlement system, so as to make compensation a policy tool of ...

The "new generation of Free Trade Agreements" announced by the Commission of the European Community signals an intention to substantially extend the geographic coverage of its reciprocal, preferential trade agreements. We review the development of regionalism in East Asia by listing the existing bilaterals and those under negotiation and conclude that the EC's initiative will have minimal effect in this region. However, globally, there are two super-hubs, namely the EC and the US, each with its network of spokes and associated rules. They are likely to compete to design any new multilateral rules which are WTO-plus.
... In particular, there are no actual or prospective bilaterals between any of the pairs taken from the...

Between July 2005 and January 2006. Swiss and US trade officials conducted exploratory talks to determine whether a free trade agreement (FTA) would be economically desirable and politically feasible. In January 2006, the talks were recessed when the Swiss Federal Council decided that - while an FTA would be economically desirable, free trade in agriculture was not politically feasible. The FTA talks may be resumed after the conclusion of the WTO Doha Development Round. Switzerland and the United States have launched a Trade and Investment Forum with a view to reaching agreements on discrete topics.

Although import duties on many agricultural products have been dropped or waived as part of preferential trading agreements, farmers in developing countries are facing new challenges to selling their products around the world. The World Trade Organization Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures () aims to provide the balance between the right of governments to protect food safety, plant and animal health, and prevent these sanitary and phytosanitary measures from being unjustified trade barriers. Following regular discussions to ensure that developing countries fully benefit from and receive assistance in meeting their obligations, the SPS Committee has adopted a procedure whereby developing countries may request special and...
