In 2008, ITC approached leaders in the fashion community and distributors in Italy and in the UK to test the potential market for bags and accessories produced in Africa. The aim was to build a direct connection with a major fashion house. Creative Director of Max&Co, Luisa Laudi, decided to use some of the samples of materials presented to develop a small collection of bags and scarves. Further samples were required from Uganda and Kenya, involving field missions to select the communities to produce them. Created for Italy's largest retail chain, Coop, Africa Community Projects (ACP) was set up in 2008 by ITCs Programme. With ITC working as an intermediary, the project connects thousands of marginalized artisans to international markets through partnerships with high-end fashion houses and distributors. To operate effectively, the program developed the 'Hub' -- a large workshop located in Nairobi's industrial area that also serves as a product development center, storage space and regional headquarters for ACP projects.
