  • The global economic crisis has exacerbated the situation. With a precipitous drop in the region's exports, aggregate growth of gross domestic product in developing Asia is forecast to decline from 6.3% in 2008 to around 3.4% this year. Recent meetings in the region have underlined three key points for making Aid for Trade more effective. The first is that regional approaches that support national development strategies are best for multiplying the benefits of Aid for Trade. Second, establishing cross-border economic corridors lies at the heart of successful Aid for Trade programs. And third, building strong partnerships between governments, the private sector and the donor community ensures the sustainability of benefits. For many years the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has recognized th...

  • As countries turn more to regionalism as a means of forwarding co-operation on trade rules and other areas of policymaking, governments are increasingly incorporating rules on investment into regional trade agreements (RTAs). The Asia-Pacific region is no exception, with many innovative agreements that include disciplines on investment protection and non-discrimination. We analyse the economic consequences of including investment provisions in trade agreements by creating an index of the extensiveness of investment provisions in RTAs and then using that index in a gravity model framework of trade and investment. The results indicate that investment provisions are positively associated with trade and, to an even greater extent, investment flows. Further, we observe an insignificant effec...

Gio Recycling, a waste management business, and its Managing Director Ofa Tu'ikolovatu are a visible part of Tonga's business landscape. Tu'ikolovatu is well known and respected in business and in the community for her efforts to reduce waste in Tonga. Beginning as a sole trader, Jackie Loheni recalls early days spent sewing on her auntie's veranda in Apia. But, realizing the requirements for expanding business, she registered MENA as a company with her mother and three sisters in 2000. Meanwhile, when Kim Arut's husband fell ill, she was l...

  • The Vikings are back at sea, and this time they come in peace. Some 500 years after Scandinavians first explored North America and more than 200 years after Sweden declined as a world power, a new ship is embarking on a goodwill voyage meant to recreate a bit of Swedish history. The tall ship Götheborg left Sweden in October on a two-year odyssey that will take it across the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans before she reaches her final destination in China. The original Götheborg sank mysteriously within sight of home 260 years ago, taking its precious cargo of Chinese porcelain, silk and tea to the bottom of the sea.

  • Trade facilitation has the potential to bring considerable economic gains to developing and least developed countries through improving their trade competitiveness and diversifying their export bases. The benefits of removing impediments to trade are substantial, with evidence suggesting that the gains from these reforms can be higher than reducing tariffs. WorldBank and UNESCAP data demonstrate that the Asia-Pacific region has made tremendous progress in reducing at- and behind-the-border time and costs, but the performance varies significantly across countries and subregions. UNESCAP recommends an integrated approach to trade facilitation which not only looks at border issues but also addresses domestic regulations and behind-the-border challenges. These issues include trade procedure...
