They may be headed for a vast prolonged and severe jobs crisis. Just as policy-markets have taken and swift action to respond to the financial and economic downturn, similar bold action is required to address the jobs crisis. First, jobs and social protection must become the bedrock of crisis responses. Second, the response must be coordinated and global. This paper examines the structure of remittances originating from Switzerland. We find that while Switzerland is reported to be the third largest source of remittances worldwide, the vast majority of these outflows are wages earned by non-resident commuters from France, Italy and Germany. We further estimate that two-thirds of the remittances made by immigrants resident in Switzerland flow to European countries with high per capita income. These findings suggest that the development impact of is negligible compared to that of other major source countries. [PUB ABSTRACT]

With the continuing shift in economic activity from developed to developing countries, the trend towards consumer growth in emerging markets requires transnational corporations to rethink the way they do business in the South. Fairtrade Labelling Organizations (FLO) International sees these global changes as an opportunity to introduce its international social certification system to consumer markets in the South. The traditional Fairtrade model -- based on consumers in developed countries buying Fairtrade-certified products from disadvantaged farmers in the global South -- is undergoing change as the growing number of consumers in emerging markets opens up new opportunities for Fairtrade producers in the South. The new opportunities presented by consumer growth in emerging markets are ...
