[Julie Nelson] joined KARE 11 in September 2003 and was named "Best Newcomer" only months later by Mpls.St.Paul Magazine. In 2000, she won a regional Emmy for anchoring, and has twice been named "Best Anchor" by City Pages. Born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Julie's paternal grandparents are both Norwegian. "I've never been to Scandinavia," she says, "but I would love to go to Norway with my parents. Every year we go to a country church right outside of Bloomer, WI, where my grandparents live. It's a Norwegian church, and one of the first churches to be built in the area. All these people of Scandinavian descent fill the pews, and the small cemetery outside is filled with Scandinavian family names. It's a great tradition.

• Sages of the sun, rain and snow: sometimes I watch the TV weathermen gesticulating wildly in front of some gyrating schematic and wonder just how much they really know. But meteorologists are rarely held accountable when they call for sun and we get rain. Wouldn't it be nice if there were a way of rating them to see just how dependable they really are?
