Traditionally, lenders wouldn't dare offer credit to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) without financial collateral. But since a major Indian bank began doing just that in 2007, the results have been staggering. In just over a year, they have enhanced opportunities for small businesses, women and entire communities. But despite their value in the economy, banks have traditionally been reluctant to loan to SMEs, based on the perception that they present higher risks. Add to that the difficulty for banks to identify which SMEs have real potential plus the higher transaction costs associated with SME banking, and the situation becomes tough for these businesses which cannot expand without credit.

ITC's experience shows that women in international trade are often "social entrepreneurs", improving their lives and those of their families, employees and communities. The potential exists for many more such cases, but women entrepreneurs are often isolated in marginal economic areas such as micro and informal businesses. Many do not have the same access as their male counterparts to trade support networks, which they need to expand their businesses. They may also need different kinds of support, for instance, more focused on services. Policy-makers and trade support institutions need to do more to evaluate and meet their specific needs, for example in export management skills, networking opportunities, technology use, business information and social support.

The fisheries and aquaculture sectors are significant contributors to the economy of Viet Nam. However, between 1976 and 1992, the Vietnamese fisheries sector experienced rapidly declining outputs due to adverse conditions such as low skills in aquatic management and exploitation, irregular and low-quality supply of materials to the processing industry, worn down production facilities and limited knowledge of modern marketing principles. Countering these constraints and deficiencies was crucial for Viet Nam to increase its fisheries and agricultural exports by gaining access to the highly regulated markets of the European Community (EC). In order to do this Viet Nam developed a twofold strategy.

Between July 2005 and January 2006. Swiss and US trade officials conducted exploratory talks to determine whether a free trade agreement (FTA) would be economically desirable and politically feasible. In January 2006, the talks were recessed when the Swiss Federal Council decided that - while an FTA would be economically desirable, free trade in agriculture was not politically feasible. The FTA talks may be resumed after the conclusion of the WTO Doha Development Round. Switzerland and the United States have launched a Trade and Investment Forum with a view to reaching agreements on discrete topics.
