Madeleine FaIk started at the Ballet Academy of Gothenburg, and thanks to a grant from Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson, pursued a career in dancing and acting, eventually ending up in Los Angeles. There she met the love of her life, Louis Garcia, "the world's best trick jump-roper". The pair has since traveled the world as "The Rebel Ropers", performing for Nike in Singapore, on the Today show, at several hotels in Las Vegas, and locally at the House of Blues. Always with a smile, the charming Swede flies through the air - spinning the rope or juggling clubs at the speed of light - while balancing on giant balls, negotiating hoops of fire, at times on stilts. An original member of "Girls on Stilts", she also works with the variety troupe "The Mums". Dancing also led to an impressive c...

Given the sharp rise in crude oil prices and growing awareness of climate change, the potential of biofuels, particularly of bioethanol, has become an ubiquitous topic of public debate and has induced ambitious policy initiatives. The latter are mostly paired with protectionist measures as the examples of the European Union and the United States show, where domestic producers of energy crops are put at an advantage thanks to subsidisation, direct payments and/or favourable tax schemes. Moreover, the EU is working out a mandatory certification scheme for ethanol imports, imposing social and environmental standards which constitute another hurdle for more efficiently produced ethanol originating in the Southern hemisphere. A similar path is taken by Switzerland's revised mineral oil tax l...

Located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Veritas is an award-winning design firm backed by a team that includes more than 40 qualified professionals and over 60 support staff. Although it began as an architectural practice, Veritas now offers a full range of design services. The firm opened its first overseas representative office in Dubai in September 2005. Meanwhile, macroeconomic factors were at work. The booming South-east Asian economy made Malaysian businesses feel invincible on the global stage and they started exploring international markets. In 2004, Veritas was appointed as architects for major developments in Iran and Pakistan, and they have recently been invited for projects in India and Indonesia. There is also a proposal to policy-makers: please respect the creative output of yo...

In an integrated global economy, specialisation in trade is an increasingly prominent strategy. A labor-abundant, resource-rich economy like Indonesia faces stiff competition in labor-intensive manufactures; meanwhile, rapid growth in demand for resources from China and India exposes it to the 'curse' of resource wealth. This diminishes prospects for more diversified growth based on renewable resources like human capital. Using an international panel data set we explore the influence of resource wealth, foreign direct investment and human capital on the share of skill-intensive products in exports. FDI and human capital increase this share; resource wealth diminishes it. We use the results to compare Indonesia with Thailand and Malaysia. Indonesia's reliance on skill-intensive export...
