  • A select group of Danish design and fashion products was exhibited at the high-end Takashimaya Department Store in September. Coinciding with Danish industry event 'Creative Nation', a group of the featured designers met up with us at the store on New York's Fifth Avenue for a portrait and a quick talk after a champagne reception with the Danish Royal Crown Prince couple, who was in town for a week of activities. We both had children and couldn't really find clothes that we wanted to dress them in. Although Denmark is very big when it comes to children's clothing (Danish children's fashion week - off Kids - is now Europe's largest fair for children's clothes), we thought that all the clothes were too bright - both in color and pattern. What we use are more neutral, natural colors like b...

  • Talk long enough to CEOs, particularly in the US or Europe, and their concerns will pour out: making their operations sustainable and developing "green" products places them at a disadvantage vis-a-vis rivals in developing countries that don't face the same pressures. Executives behave as though they have to choose between the largely social benefits of developing sustainable products or processes and the financial costs of doing so. The key to progress, particularly in times of economic crisis, is innovation. Just as some Internet companies survived the bust in 2000 to challenge incumbents, so too will sustainable corporations emerge from today's recession to upset the status quo. That competitive advantage will stand them in good stead, because sustainability will always be an integra...

  • It's springtime for Munch lovers in New York. Scandinavia House presents "Edvard Munch: Symbolism in Print" and on MoMA there's "Edvard Munch: The Modern Life of the Soul". Alienation was a typical fin de siècle emotion," said Patrick Amsellem, a Swede currently working on his Ph.D. in art and architectural history at NYU, during a gallery talk at Scandinavia House. "It came along with the new, urbanized society.

  • I recommend a visit to nearby Râbjerg Mile, the largest shifting sand dune in Northern Europe. One can easily imagine that one is Lawrence of Arabia on the hilly dunes, and they are a great place to fly a kite because of the ever-present wind. The dunes are close to [Skagen]'s Grenen, a steadily expanding finger of beach at the very top of Northern Jutland where one can stand with one foot in two different seas, the Skagerrak and Kattegat. The most famous artist in this group was Denmark's P.S. Krøyer, whose paintings are among the most-loved in Scandinavian art. (Oneof his paintings completed in 1888 called "Hip, hip hurrah!" portrays a festive picnic, which is the inspiration of a 1987 film of the same name about the Skagen colony, staring Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård). Historians ...

  • On October 12 cheers rang out as the Swedish Academy announced Turkish author Orhan Pamuk as this year's Nobel Prize Winner in Literature. Pamuk, who was born in 1952, had long been a favorite for the award, and is the first Turkish writer to be honored with the prize. In the words of the Swedish Academy, Pamuk's "quest for the melancholic soul of his native city" made him discover "new symbols for the clash and interlacing of cultures". Pamuk was born 1952 in Istanbul where he still lives. In mid-November the author faced a handful of Swedish reporters for an intimate press conference at the Swedish Consul's residence in New York. Looking suave in a dark pinstripe blazer and matching pants, Pamuk seemed happy and relaxed. He has had quite a year. In 2005, Pamuk condemned the mass killi...

  • In an interview, Jocelyn Wyatt, head of IDEO's social innovation design domain, talked about the power of design to change the world. IDEO began 30 years ago by designing products. However, over time they've applied the approach of human-centered design to services, spaces, businesses and systems. They believe in the power of design thinking to enrich and transform, and to take on big challenges that the world faces, from climate change to education and health care to financial inclusion. They are currently working with Acumen Fund on a water project in India and Kenya. They have developed a social marketing campaign to spread awareness about the importance of drinking safe water and a water delivery business and cart for female micro-entrepreneurs to deliver water in slum communities. ...
