Good governance in trade policy provides legitimate channels of access to decision-makers, not only for business, but also for other groups -- women, consumers, environmental protection activists and so on. To be transparent and inclusive, the process has to include open debate to resolve inevitable conflicts of interest, lay down common positions and establish what Prof Michel Kostecki, consultant on business advocacy to ITC, calls the "community of interests". As discussions between groups move from the specific to the general, they begin to identify common ground for devising positions they can communicate to government negotiators. Good governance on trade policy also requires inclusiveness, bringing in voices that may seldom be heard. The essential is to be able to tread the fine l...

In an integrated global economy, specialisation in trade is an increasingly prominent strategy. A labor-abundant, resource-rich economy like Indonesia faces stiff competition in labor-intensive manufactures; meanwhile, rapid growth in demand for resources from China and India exposes it to the 'curse' of resource wealth. This diminishes prospects for more diversified growth based on renewable resources like human capital. Using an international panel data set we explore the influence of resource wealth, foreign direct investment and human capital on the share of skill-intensive products in exports. FDI and human capital increase this share; resource wealth diminishes it. We use the results to compare Indonesia with Thailand and Malaysia. Indonesia's reliance on skill-intensive export...

This paper investigates the relationship between exports and overseas links using data from the UK Community Innovation Survey. Overseas vertical and horizontal links are associated with an average increase in export intensity of 74 and 156 percent for vertical and horizontal overseas links respectively. Firm size shows no significant interactions with overseas links. The data suggests that overseas links are a relatively infrequent form of conducting trade. My findings support the role of government in fostering overseas links as, despite their rarity they are effective export conduits. [PUB ABSTRACT]

Einstein's message is simple: at moments of distress in business life or in society, it's important that organizations strengthen their commitment to finding groundbreaking solutions. The reality of these words is as meaningful today as ever. They must maintain their commitment to corporate social responsibility. Grupo Santander Brasil is a successful example of a financial institution implementing a strategic model in order to fit a new and changing society. Chosen from 129 financial institutions across 54 countries, Grupo Santander Brasil was recognized as the Sustainable Bank of the Year in the 2008 Financial Times Awards. One of the bank's initiatives is a project called TurismoReal, or Real Tourism. The project was based on Brazil's enormous tourism potential, and the comparative l...

This article describes general budget support as an instrument of development cooperation. Based on poverty reduction strategies, poorer developing countries are increasingly receiving general budget support which enables their governments to carry out their core responsibilities more effectively. Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and risks are discussed in a holistic approach. In view of aid effectiveness and efficiency, the author draws on an evaluation which was carried out in the context of the DAC/OECD in 2006, as well as on experience made in Switzerland's budget support engagement. He argues that the budget support methodology could also inspire the cooperation with non-governmental organisations.
