Given the sharp rise in crude oil prices and growing awareness of climate change, the potential of biofuels, particularly of bioethanol, has become an ubiquitous topic of public debate and has induced ambitious policy initiatives. The latter are mostly paired with protectionist measures as the examples of the European Union and the United States show, where domestic producers of energy crops are put at an advantage thanks to subsidisation, direct payments and/or favourable tax schemes. Moreover, the EU is working out a mandatory certification scheme for ethanol imports, imposing social and environmental standards which constitute another hurdle for more efficiently produced ethanol originating in the Southern hemisphere. A similar path is taken by Switzerland's revised mineral oil tax l...

With biofuels becoming more prominent on the global market, production is being expanded in Brazil, Asia and Africa. Four years of research and public and industry consultation have led to the first-ever world standards for sugar cane production, BSI standards, developed using the ISEAL code of good practice, were finalized at the end of 2009, and the first accredited ethanol is expected to be released in November 2010. BSI standards for the production of sugar and sugar cane products are designed to be accessible to corporations of all sizes and BSI is committed to helping them gain accreditation. These have focused mainly on Brazil, the world's largest producer of sugar cane, which has been expanding production to meet growing global biofuel demand. The expansion of sugar cane into ar...

Consumer interest in cleaner and greener auto technology is exploding, even in the United States. From fuel cells to plugin hybrids, the industry is showing more research and development zeal than at any time since the golden days of 1900, when gasoline, steam and electric vehicles (ev's) competed in the marketplace. This spring's car salon in Geneva, Switzerland was greener than ever, and one manufacturer dominated the headlines for its BioPower engines: Saab Cars of Sweden. These days wholly owned by gm, Saab introduced yet another BioPower model - the 9-3 production car - now available with a flex-fuel engine which runs on regular gas or gas with an 85% ethanol content. But the star and talk of the show, the car that became the favorite image for major European news media was the Saa...
