The reason for [hus] is mainly the realization that Scandinavia has so many great brands that never get their due attention it the U.S.," says owner Steen Knigge. "Either they don't want to bother with the rules and regulations, liability issues and lawyers in the U.S. - which is understandable, or they get lost in the vastness of all other brands. I wanted to create a place where Scandinavian brands, both known and unknown, could leverage off of each other. In essence, [hus] is about offering the consumer new unknown brands as well along with the more traditional, established Scandinavian names.
Knigge himself is appropriately polished and suave, but still approachable and friendly. He's the man you'd trust to help you hunt down a hip item for your fashionista girlfriend, or design-f...

A select group of Danish design and fashion products was exhibited at the high-end Takashimaya Department Store in September. Coinciding with Danish industry event 'Creative Nation', a group of the featured designers met up with us at the store on New York's Fifth Avenue for a portrait and a quick talk after a champagne reception with the Danish Royal Crown Prince couple, who was in town for a week of activities.
We both had children and couldn't really find clothes that we wanted to dress them in. Although Denmark is very big when it comes to children's clothing (Danish children's fashion week - off Kids - is now Europe's largest fair for children's clothes), we thought that all the clothes were too bright - both in color and pattern. What we use are more neutral, natural colors like b...

Ole Bull, the great virtuoso violinist, known as the "Paganini of the North," had just established the first Norwegian theater in Bergen, and, seeing what a promising young man [Henrik Ibsen] was, engaged him as a "scene instructor," with the condition that he write one play every year. The engagement lasted six years - crucial years in Ibsen's life, during which he learned about the theater from the ground up and was given opportunities to travel to Denmark and Germany to study stagecraft.
Ibsen's last residence is now a museum, offering special tours of the inner sanctum of his and [Suzannah]'s home. Visiting, I was struck by its rich, plush, Victorian-style furniture. Their home, according to the guide, had also been a wonder in terms of modern conveniences, ahead of the Royal Palace...

Documentary films have in recent years achieved unprecedented glory and success in the United States. Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" not only was named best picture at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, but also made big bucks at the box office. "Bowling for Columbine" attracted a large audience to theatres nationwide, and crystallized a lively debate about violence in schools. Similarly, the documentary "Super Size Me" was yet another U.S. documentary that became a global hit: That orgy of on-screen gluttony even gave the world's largest fast-food chain, McDonalds, a severe case of PR-indigestion.
In neighbouring Denmark, [Karolina Lidin] observes, new documentaries tend to have an intellectual and poetic edge. This is probably due partly to the influence of demon director Lars von Trie...

The brand carrying one of Sweden's most well-known individual sports personalities also seems on track to appear in the U.S. Who was 2-time tennis Player of the Year (1979-80); won 6 French Opens and 5 straight Wimbledons (1976-80); led Sweden to the 1st Davis Cup win in 1975; and retired in 1983 at age 26? We know, it's a no-brainer: Björn Borg, Inc. has started quietly with mostly underwear, online at www.b/ornborg.com and in a store on Manhattan, at 89 Crosby Street.
While NYC and sf might seem far away, you can experience Scandinavian Swedish fashion at any number of h&m stores throughout the country. Starting with its Flagship store on Fifth Avenue, nyc in 2000, the brand with the concept of 'Fashion and Quality at the best price' now has over 170 stores in the U.S. with anothe...
