  • In this case, the elephants are trailing the mouse; both Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds have picked up on not just the concept of moist snuff or "snus," which is the original Swedish word for this, but adopted the name itself. RJ Reynolds launched "Camel Snus" and Philip Morris "Marlboro Snus" in 2006 and 2007. Snus is the Swedish term for moist snuff - a minor part of the global tobacco business "owned" by Swedish Match, which for good reason holds a market leader position in the segment. Who knows how the playing field will change, as more and more societies in the world make it harder and harder for nicotine users to light up. • This paper analyses the European Commission's communication Global Europe and attempts to demonstrate that the substance behind the shift in emphasis towards bilateral trade policy is an extension of existing EU bilateral trade policy; that the shift is not convincingly justified by the analysis in the EU Commission papers; that the shift might be best thought of as an attempt to re-energise corporate sector support for trade liberalisation in the face of the suspension of the Doha Development Agenda and a weakening of political support for trade liberalisation.

  • The women of western Africa have been using shea nut butter for centuries to protect their skin from dry Saharan winds. Through innovative enterprise, its now protecting them in other ways, too. A similar program in Mali, supported by ITC, is also demonstrating the potential for export to improve the situation of women in developing countries. Shea butter production is the focus of one of several programs recently implemented by ITC to assist women in Mali in developing their entrepreneurial skills and incomes. ITC is working with the sector development coordination team in Mali to continue to support social and economic development and export growth of the shea butter sector until 2010, through its work in the All ACP Agricultural Commodities Program, funded by the European Union.

  • Although not at the center of the world's economy, developing countries are at its mercy dependent on trade investment and aid; never is this felt more than in times of crisis. A further concern, common among developing countries, is a lack of diversification in export markets. But the impact of the financial crisis isn't limited to export markets; national incomes are threatened on several fronts. Developing countries are being told to prepare for steep declines in aid donations and remittances. Many developing countries are looking toward strategic planning and restructuring of financial systems, to bolster their economies in difficult times. Challenge is the need to balance the governments need for revenue and reducing the cost of doing business. Ghana relies heavily on the EU, the U...

  • This paper investigates the relationship between exports and overseas links using data from the UK Community Innovation Survey. Overseas vertical and horizontal links are associated with an average increase in export intensity of 74 and 156 percent for vertical and horizontal overseas links respectively. Firm size shows no significant interactions with overseas links. The data suggests that overseas links are a relatively infrequent form of conducting trade. My findings support the role of government in fostering overseas links as, despite their rarity they are effective export conduits. [PUB ABSTRACT]
