Between July 2005 and January 2006. Swiss and US trade officials conducted exploratory talks to determine whether a free trade agreement (FTA) would be economically desirable and politically feasible. In January 2006, the talks were recessed when the Swiss Federal Council decided that - while an FTA would be economically desirable, free trade in agriculture was not politically feasible. The FTA talks may be resumed after the conclusion of the WTO Doha Development Round. Switzerland and the United States have launched a Trade and Investment Forum with a view to reaching agreements on discrete topics.

The 2008 World Export Development Forum (WEDF) in Montreux was the 10th forum since 1999. Its raison d'etre, says the ITC's Executive Director, Ms Patricia Francis, is to provide a forum where developing markets are exposed to the knowledge and technical information necessary for them to compete on an equal footing with their developed nation counterparts. More than 200 delegates, from 30 countries, gathered for the conference, which this year adopted the theme, Consumer Conscience: How Environment and Ethics are Influencing Exports. More than 20 plenary sessions and breakout series dealt with a range of topical issues including consumer conscience, food miles, buying local, ethical fashion and the impact of climate change. An exceptionally high caliber of informed speakers and panelist...

In this case, the elephants are trailing the mouse; both Philip Morris and RJ Reynolds have picked up on not just the concept of moist snuff or "snus," which is the original Swedish word for this, but adopted the name itself. RJ Reynolds launched "Camel Snus" and Philip Morris "Marlboro Snus" in 2006 and 2007. Snus is the Swedish term for moist snuff - a minor part of the global tobacco business "owned" by Swedish Match, which for good reason holds a market leader position in the segment. Who knows how the playing field will change, as more and more societies in the world make it harder and harder for nicotine users to light up.

As international businesses explore the developing world to find new consumer markets, firms are realizing that long-term prosperity depends on the development of these markets. As a result, more partnerships are springing up between international companies, NGOs and development agencies. They are finding common interests and learning from each other in the process. For years the work of social entrepreneurs often passed unnoticed in the outside world. Now that is changing. Social entrepreneurs are set to have a profound impact on the world's most complex societal and environmental challenges. Their impact may be limited by their current scale, but could be limitless with the right business partners. Several developments indicate the rise of social entrepreneurship in public awareness. ...
