So Far, so Good

On to "A Child's Scandinavia," in which Bo Zaunders, one of Scandinavia's most capable storytellers, tells the story of visiting the "Disneylands" of three of the five Nordic nations. Roxie Munroe kicks off the article with an illustration that is hopefully not the last from her that we'll enjoy in the magazine. Her illustrations usually adorn the covers of The New Yorker, but Roxie is also, as we recently found out, an industrious children's book co-author and artist. Her books, including "D...

Tidbits

One can imagine that this would make a fun present for newlyweds. Among the other good ideas one can find at the Amokka website or in their Copenhagen café are Irish coffee choco sticks (just stir one into your cup of coffee), ecologically friendly coffee caramels, or cookbooks like "Genius Stews" or "Sovereign Salads." "Diverse ways of happiness" is the theme of the art program of EXPO 2005. Tea Mäkipää's contribution, titled "A world of diversity," is a photo installation described by the a...

Fate of War in Finland

One of the most tragic consequences of all wars is its impact on innocent children. That was exactly the case in Finland, which sent over 70,000 of its children out of harm's way to avoid war sixty years ago. Some 10,000 to 15,000 of the Finnish children never returned to their birthplace.

2004: Year of the Hives

The year 2004 has been huge for The Hives. Defying the opinions of some who thought the Hives were all hype, the band won widespread kudos for their long awaited third album, "Tyrannosaurus Hives," a follow-up to their breakthrough album "Vini Vidi Vicious."

Beowulf in Iceland

Maybe you have read the poem, the eighth century Anglo-Saxon inspiration for Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Soon you can see the movie.

Path of Sorrows

Elisabeth Ohlson Wallin, one of Sweden's best-known and most provocative photographers, focuses in her latest project on the global Aids disaster. South Africa Via Dolorosa -- presented this fall at Stockholm's performing and visual art museum Dansmuseet -- gives a voice to the quiet agony of people whose lives have been wrecked by the epidemic.

Spain Meets Japan in Sweden

Celebrated Spanish interior designer Patricia Urquiola has done a makeover of the Fuji conference room at Yasuragi Hasseludden, an unusual Japanese-style hotel and spa on the outskirts of Stockholm. "We immediately fell in love with the existing...

'Snus' Ladies Use It, Too

All are said to use moist snuff, the special type of tobacco that the Swedes call "snus." Sweden has long been the promised land of smokeless tobacco. In fact, it is more common for men to use snus here than to smoke. One can recognize the male snus user from the tell-tale ring pattern on the front pocket of his jeans, a result of the flat snus can rubbing against the jeans fabric. "It is a bad habit, but very pleasant," says [Maria Trolle-Lindgren], a first-year student in media design at Be...

A Glimpse of Life in America

The English and Swedish-language book "[Anna]: Amerikan Mummu" (published by Journal, Stockholm, 2004) is a worthy tribute to a woman whose fate was probably typical for Nordic immigrants to the USA, but at the same time was most remarkable. The author/photographer explains in her preface how her grandmother, in 1959, "realized her life's dream and alone, with a couple of hundred dollars and no special skills in English," took an airplane to New York, where she first worked in a shirt factory...

Walking On Water

The main living area is characterized by large floor-to-ceiling windows, again overlooking the water, that allow the light to flood in. Oak flooring and neutral walls provide a blank canvas upon which to showcase the room's almost sculptural furnishings. Swathes of light also enable innovative pieces, such the large white sculpture by Swedish sculptor Eva Hild and Olga Thorson's handmade ceramic `Woman' lamp to create their own playful shadows across the floor. In the corner, a Contura fire b...

Going to the Moon...Or Iceland

One of my riding companions, Patty Gibson from Boston, Massachusetts, had previously tried Western-style riding in Colorado. "On these Icelandic horses, the gait is much smoother," she commented. We dismounted half way on the tour to let our mounts chew on some grass and to learn that the Icelandic horse, known for its strength, good nature, and sure-footedness, is a five-gaited horse. In addition to the three basic gaits, walk, trot and canter, the Icelandic horse can master both pace and Tö...

Keeping the Tradition

So-are the Germans taking over?" With a smile and a laugh, Augustana College's president, Steven Bahls assures that the Swedes have nothing to worry about. As a German-American Lutheran, Bahls feels right at home at Augustana, and is now entering his second year of service.

My Swedish Odyssey

"Gee," I thought to myself. "I've never been here before, but I've never before felt so much at home." "Hejsan," I said. "Talar du engelska?" ("Hi, do you speak English?") "Well," I continued, "my grandmother left Tidaholm 90 years ago, in 1909, and I'm the first relative to ever return here to see where she came from..."

How Safe Are You? Future Design Days Re-Design Fear

The relationship of fear to design was tackled in various forums by an impressive cast of international speakers. Some of the design stars who came to Stockholm to participate and pontificate were: Inga Sempe, one of France's hottest designers; Tom Dixon and George Sowden of the UK; Massimo Morozzi of Italy; Claudy Jongstra of the Netherlands; Belgian furniture designer Dirk Wynants; Marimekko's Kirsti Paakkanen of Finland and "virtual" architect Hani Rashid of the USA. Some of the most modes...

The Art of Form and Function

With a father who was a fourth-generation master joiner, Mathsson's vocation was perhaps preordained. But after learning the joiner's craft in his home town of Värnamo, Sweden, he soon developed a fascination with the possibilities offered by using new wood technology in making furniture. Mathsson immersed himself in design literature from the Röhsska Arts and Craft Museum in Gothenburg, and emerged, according to Håkan Sjöman, chairman of the Mathsson Group and the Mathsson Fund, as "one of t...

Norway Celebrates 100 Year Birthday

One hundred years ago, in 1905, the union between Sweden and Norway was dissolved. For a while, things looked tense and it looked like Sweden might go to war to keep Norway as part of the kingdom. But the divorce was peaceful and today the two neighbors are close friends. That is to say, they are close friends except when Norwegians meet Swedes on the hockey rink, soccer field, or ski slope.

Mean Streets of Oslo

This may sound like Charles Dickens tear-jerker material, but Uno is presented without an ounce of sentimentality. The protagonist is one of those macho shaved-headed types whose identity is confirmed by his muscle-bulging pals. One quality that makes this flick rise above the pack is that the characters have unexpected weaknesses and strengths.

Who Loves Tv Commercials?

They had stuffed some extraneous material in my film. Of course, I felt my rights were violated," [Claes Eriksson] told the Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter. Veteran filmmaker Vilgot Sjöman, best known for his groundbreaking erotic film "I am curious, Yellow," also went to court for damages after his film "Alfred" was shown on TV with two commercial breaks.

Long Live Mr. Dead!

The Nonnabúd boutique is obviously successful, but Jón regards himself primarily as an artist. In February 2005, he will stage an exhibit in Reykjavik's Galleri Svavar Karls. Mr. Dead regards his fashions as alternative works of art, too; "The clothing is basically a silkscreen on fabric that can be hung on the wall, or worn," he says. Mr. Dead will continue to explore the borderland between visual art and fashion in a new project. He is designing a line of suits, which will be hand-tailored ...

Soundtrack of Our Lives, Revisited

"Origins" (Warner Music) contains a few tunes with a driving beat and catchy melodies, comparable to "Sister Surround" on "Face the Music" of 2001, the album which brought about the group's international breakthrough. The driving beat of "Bigtime," for example, deserved and got lots of radio play after the album was released in the fall in Scandinavia. And "Midnight children" in which we hear the panting voice of Jane Birkin of "Je t'aime" fame singing a duet with Ebbot, has a haunting Lou Re...

Much Ado About Munch

Most visitors in Oslo for the first time want to visit the Munch Museum, to see the works of Norway's most well-known artist. However, the theft on August 22 of [Edvard Munch]'s most famous masterpieces, "Skrik" (The Scream), and "Madonna," has caused the museum to close its doors while security is improved. The museum is not expected to open again until June 2005.

Superhero Anti-Virus Fighter -- And Rap Music Artist

The first line of global defense against nasty computer viruses rests in the hands of guys like Mikko Hyppönen, the 34 year-old Helsinki-based director of anti-virus research at F-Secure, the largest and probably the oldest data security firm in Europe. Long-haired Hyppönen has emerged as a sort of media star in the anti-virus league, a technocrat who plays in a Finnish rap music band and is a darling of magazines like Wired or Vanity Fair. "Starting in the beginning of 2003 we have seen what...

Made in Scandinavia

Her first commercial footwear and accessories collection, to be released in Spring 2005 under her own label FINSK, are crafted using heels made of Finnish birch wood. The heels are colored using a unique new method for dying wood developed and patented in Finland by Riku Kärri, which allows the color to thoroughly permeate the wood, rather than just the surface. "It is a new method, something that can be used for furniture," [Julia Lundsten] explained in a phone interview. "If you stain the w...

A Child's Scandinavia

Thus, in Odense, where my wife and I recently visited, HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN is duly honored with not only one of the oldest museums in the world to pay homage to a writer's life and work, but with Fyrtøjet, THE TINDERBOX, a Cultural House for Children. Here, before entering, the youngsters are given small suitcases packed with fun items that may come in handy as they proceed to travel through Andersen's classic fairy tales. They're also invited to dress up in costumes and have their faces ...

A Scandinavian Celebration

Collectively, the Minneapolis-based photographers have illustrated Nordic life and culture in both Scandinavia and their native Minnesota for over three-quarters of a century. Prominent citizens within the Scandinavian-American community, they've also been Norway's official U.S. photographers on numerous occasions. [Bob Paulson] was the official photographer for the late Norwegian King Olav V during his visits to the U.S. between 1968 and 1987, and the fatherson team was selected for King Har...

Strong Icelandic Women; a True Saga

If a woman is slapped in the face in an Icelandic film or novel, you can be dead certain that a terrible act of retribution is soon to come. It is likely that someone will be brutally murdered to revenge the humiliation. This isn't a new trend in Iceland, but a modern echo of the distant medieval era, when a series of histories called the Icelandic sagas were recorded. In several of these sagas, written in the 13th century but usually based on events which took place in the 10th and 11th cent...

Morten Sohlberg &Amp; Min Ye

If coffee is not enough, you are more in the mood for Fjord Smoked Salmon, Herring Sampler or Lefse, head for charming Stone Street in the Financial District of downtown New York where you'll find "Smörgåschef." The beer is Danish, the meatballs Swedish, the salmon Norwegian and the shrimp from Iceland.

Sit at Your Own Risk

Not surprislngly, therewere quite a few beautiful and unusual chairs and sofas at the Future Design Days 2004 exhibition. Many visitors enjoyed cooling their heels in the modernistic white, high-backed couches made available for the public by Lammhults of Sweden. The extremely clever "Picnik" table-seating furniture, created by Extremis of Belgium, was also widely admired.
