Both present potentially lethal, fast-moving and fleeting targets that are difficult to engage other than by dedicated air defence vehicles with rapid response weapons.

Air Defence

New doctrine puts pressure on air defence; to achieve its objective of fighting wars without incurring casualties, the United States has come to rely upon air power to cripple an enemy to the point where surrender becomes the preferred option. This new doctrine was clearly followed in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan but the conduct of the American-led Nato conflict over Kosovo revealed similar thinking.

Simulation Approach

Technology adapted for jungle warfare; jungle theatres provide some of the most challenging conditions for military operations anywhere on earth. Unlike the wide-open spaces of the hot deserts or the Arctic tundra, which offer their own challenges of extreme climatic conditions, the confines of the jungle hinder navigation and movement, forcing the soldier closer to nature than any other type of operation.
